Acne marks, sun and aging spots… We just can’t seem to get rid of them. People think of a burning or a chemical peel when they acids. However what I’m going to talk about today does no such thing. (or it shouldn’t anyway)
We see AHA’s, so Alpha Hydroxy Acids, on the ingredients lists as glycolic, lactic and citric the most often. There are also many fruit enzymes that go in this category (i.e. papaya, pineapple, pumpkin) These acids dissolve the upper layer of cells to trigger repair and renewal. They work especially well if you’re in your 20’s-30’s, as it’s harder to repair and reverse deep wrinkles as we age.
The smallest one of all acids is glycolic, it yields the best result as it can penetrate deeper. It regenerates collagen, thickens the skin and provides an even skin tone. Which is why it’s a great option for people with really thin skin that show veins.

Lactic and citric acids are less irritating so if you experience sensitivity towards glycolic, you can opt for these. Lactic acid is a good choice for those with dry and dehydrated skins.

Side effects of these acids can be sun sensitivity so one must use sun protection when using these products. To avoid skin irritation, you can start with a product with low concentrations of AHA. Also, start out by applying AHA skin products every other day, gradually working up to a daily application. They may give a tingling sensation but if you feel any burning, stop using the product, that’s not normal.
Salicylic acid is good for removing excess oil and dead skin. It exfoliates the skin and can improve skin texture. It can penetrate deeply into pores therefore it can clean blackheads and minimize the look of pores. It is less irritating than AHA’s bu can provide similar results.

Benzoyl Peroxide is a good option for acne treatment as it’s antibacterial. It works on white-head blemishes. Products containing it should be used with caution as it can bleach clothing as well. Although it’s suitable for all skin types, it would be safer to only use on problem areas.
